It started in Saratoga Springs, New York, back in the early 1880s. A pig, revered as a symbol of good health, happiness, and prosperity, was made from hard peppermint candy. After a holiday supper, it was broken in a cloth bag and the pieces were shared by all in the hopes of good fortune for the coming year. Our 8 oz. peppermint pig comes with a red velvet bag and a metal hammer to start your own holiday tradition. Replacement pigs and peppermint piglets (3 oz.) sold separately. This will make a delightful hostess gift that's sure to liven up a holiday party.

A new Tradition from the old We first ordered Noel the peppermint pig for Christmas 2011. And while they year was hard, (We all had a rough 2012) we are still here. My family referred to Noel often when times were the toughest, bringing a smile back to tearful faces. We had some left over and it was used over the year to help with upset tummies due to its high quality! 2012, though times were tight, the entire family agreed Noel needed to be part of our holiday traditions. We passed the velvet bag around and each family member spoke their hopes and intentions for the new year. Peppermint Pig makes the New York Times! On the day I was presenting the Peppermint Pig as a Christmas gift, there was an article about the origin of the pig and custom in the NY Times. Excellent timing! So, I brought the pig to dinner and at the end of the meal, the six of us, including two pre-teens read the story and then proceeded to break up the pig with the hammer and state what we were grateful for. It was a smashing [pun intended] success. Great peppermint taste. January 1, 2013

Our Beloved Tradition I first introduced the Peppermint Pig tradition to my extended family eight years ago at my Christmas Eve dinner. My sister was so enchanted with it that she took the pieces for her Christmas Day dinner. The Peppermint Pig has been a part of our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners ever since!
