Suggested by George Luth, Pensacola, FL

For those who are unfamiliar with brown bread in a can, it may seem like some newfangled, space-age contrivance. But as those lucky enough to have been reared on this wholesome treat can tell you, it's a throwback to old New England. B&M's version has been tantalizing taste buds since 1867. Extremely moist and dense, this mouthwatering bread is made using only natural ingredients and has a rich molasses taste that comes through with every bite. Slice and serve right out of the can or, if you prefer, toast, bake, or microwave it. Great with cream cheese, peanut butter and jelly, or flavored cheese spreads topped with cold cuts. Available plain or with raisins. Approx. 8 servings in 16 oz. can.

Brown Bread in a Can The taste was great, just as I remember as a kid. I sliced the bread and spread it with flavored cream cheese for a special party. I did have trouble getting the bread out of the can, so I opened both ends and pushed the bread out of the can. April 12, 2013
Memories in a Can I have a part-time job in a gift store in the Atlanta. The women I work with are from all over the States. I grew up in Philadelphia. One day we were discussing foods we remembered from our childhood. I brought up bread in a can. The reaction was so funny. We all had stories about our mothers and bread in the can. Some families had it with cream cheese; others remembered butter and jelly. None of us remembered toasting it. The first thing I said was "I know I can find it and proceeded to tell them about Vermont Country Sore" It wasn't a week later that I brought it to work as a surprise treat! I might add that the age range is from 73 to 40. Thanks for the fun experience and new memory. April 10, 2013

memories We used to have it most Saturday nights with beans and Sconland franks when I was a kid in NH. Still just as good, which is more than I can say about today's franks. March 19, 2013
Similar to mother's Brown Bread Revisiting my childhood in Brockton,Mass March 18, 2013
great with soup have always enjoyed this bread, especially with soup....prefer butter on it to cream cheese February 9, 2013
This is German Bread This is originally German/Dutch bread- call it Boston Brown Bread if you want... I would say German or Dutch because that is where the bread originally came from. In US we like to re-instate everything as our own but this is not the case. Very good and worth the money because you can take on trips- check in luggage at airport and camp with. High in fiber. Have not tried plain- only raisin. February 2, 2013
A true classic New England staple I recently took a trip to Maine, my first time in the New England area. The friends I was staying with showed me things like Moxie and B&M Brown Bread in a can. I could taste the history in these products, so I searched online when I came back home to California for a place to order the bread from. Thank God for the Vermont Country store! January 17, 2013

What Our Customers Are Saying about Our Brown Bread in a Can (Set of 2 Cans) …

"My mom use to have this smothered in butter with a cup of tea on cold winter nights....I buy it to experience a wonderful memory! Thanks" - Sherry, Daly City,

"I was raised on this bread; so glad to see that it is available. I loved it." - jerri, bullhead city, AZ

"It goes so well with baked beans like my grandma made." - clyde devoid, colchester, VT

"i remember this since i was a little girl...my husband also said he had it since he was a kid..we both love it with butter, or cream cheese, and it was fun pushing it out of the can and slicing it already shaped...." - madeline and bill, drexel hill, PA

"My father (who died a few years ago) used to buy this all the time for me, when I was little. He and my mom were separated, and little things like the canned bread made his home seem more like home. I would eat it (smothered in butter) while he and I talked about what I did in school, or while we watched TV. That was 20 years ago, but it's so nice that memories like that can be kept alive by being able to buy a product like the brown bread in a can. Fun times at my dad's house." - Ann Morse, El Centro, CA

"My mom was originally from Bellows Falls, Vermont, and made a bean pot of homemade baked beans, and there was nothing better than a layer of butter (the real stuff) on the brown bread and then a fork-full of baked beans piled on one side as you take a big bite. Great memories. I am ordering some cans to have those great times again!" - Dave Aldrich-Thorpe, Punxsutawney, PA

"My story is so similar to the others. I was raised by my grandmother, who was born in Alabama in 1890! We had this wonderful treat at least every week. I have been looking for it for years to share with my grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Thanks for having this memorial product!" - Nancy, Santa Clara, CA

"My recollection of B&M Brown Bread was as an elementary school child, being served it as a guest at lunch with my first friend. Her mother made it with cream cheese and it was utterly yummy. I thought it so elegant at the time, and I consider it now still delicious, if not elegant, yet so special." - Em Ziri, Evanston, IL

"I remember this as a child growing up in chilly south San Francisco. My mom steamed it in the can and then pushed it out, and served it with butter -- yummy! Long before microwaves! I haven't had this in years, but now I think I'll buy some for a nice treat!" - Liz, Huntington Beach, CA

"I grew up eating this bread and thought I would share it with my grown family. My son-in-law hadn't had it since his mom died; he cried." - Paula Lankford, Cumming, GA

"My mother made this for us, especially since our dad was from Barre, Vermont, and we just loved it. Dad would say, "Tastes like home." 70 years later, and I have not had any since I was 8. Will probably order this as I never copied the recipe from Mom." - Verna Terry, Santa Clara, CA

"When I was a kid, one of my favorite Sunday night meals was leftover ham with baked beans and B&M Brown Bread. We'd eat the ham cold, but the bread made the meal. I am tempted to buy some and introduce my husband to it!" - Adele Rodriguez, Bohemia, NY

"My mom used to make this when I was a child. She poured the batter into coffee cans, then into a large roaster with water in the bottom and baked it. It was one of my favorite treats. (She always made mine with raisins.) About 3 years ago she ordered this item for me for Christmas. While I must admit, not quite as good as Mother made, it is absolutely delicious and I savored every bite. Recently we recalled this purchase. I plan to purchase again soon. Thanks so much, Cat in Texas"- Cathy Bankhead, Glen Rose, TX

"I'm 71 years old and have not been able to find this stuff for over 50 years. I ordered some from your store and now spend most of my time sitting by the mailbox waiting for my shipment to arrive. I have already gone to town and purchased some Philly cream cheese, as I remember that was the way I used to eat it and enjoy. Thanks for making it available to me again." - John Billings, Kinder, LA

"My dad was from Vermont, and that's the only place I know that I can still get it. Growing up, we used to eat it with hot dogs and beans, and when we had some left my mom would mix Phillidelpha cream cheese with cherries (and some cherry juice) together and put it on the brown bread for dessert. I was born and raised in the South, and you cannot find it down here, at least I haven't seen it down here since I was a little girl. I'm tickled pink to know that I can get it on line. Thanks." - Debra Mack, Belle Chasse, LA

"Oh how I have searched and searched and searched for this bread. My mom used to serve it to us for a treat, smothered in butter. I have loved it since I was a kid, and that was about 66 years ago. I always thought Mom made it from her own recipe, but neither my sister nor I could find it in her recipe box. I am ordering it NOW. If you send the recipe, I would also appreciate it. Can hardly wait to taste it again. I'm going to give one to my sister, Kay. Wow, now that's sharing!!!!" - Mary Fraley, Sugar Grove, IL

"As a senior in high school, the FHA sponsor took a group of girls to Mercer University in Macon, GA for a club covention. Our sponsor provided lunch from the trunk of her car. No doubt, a number of tasty sandwiches were included, but the one thing I remember was the Brown Bread with cream cheese spread. I had never had this treat before, and one taste was all it took to let me know that I'd stumbled upon the love of my life! I don't think anyone else got any because I stood there and ate them all. The sponsor came by and saw that her plate of brown bread was empty and said, "My, my, someone must like my brown bread and cream cheese!" I said not a word, but my heart (or my taste buds) would never be the same again. I've been unable to find it in the stores anymore and few even seem to remember it now. I did locate one can of the raisin flavor, so all hope is not gone that one day I'll find a can or two of the plain. Oh, happy day!!!!" - Christine Karr, Carrollton, GA
