These candies were expensive - and disappointing. The texture was very hard, yet the pieces also stuck to your teeth. Maybe this was a "bad batch" but frankly, the candy tasted a little stale. Not as good as most of the other treats we've purchased from Vermont County Store. We decided not to serve it for our upcoming party.

Since I was a child living in Montreal (well over 60 years ago), I've carried sweet memories of one of my favorite candies. Known then as "sponge toffee," I've searched a number of retro candy sites over the years and was excited to discover in my Vermont Country Store catalog what seemed to be a the reincarnation of this treat. Aside from the hard candy top and bottom, the "sponge" candy that was snuggled in the middle was truly the delightful and tasty memory come back to life for me. Thank you!!!

Hard to find candy! Most are chocolate covered.
This candy in all its simplicity is delicious.
It reminds me of creme brulee. It has a sweet yet slightly burnt edge to it- like Creme Brulee or a toasted marshmallow.
If I recall correctly, 4 simple ingredients make up this old fashioned favorite.
If there was room for improvement it is certainly NOT on this excellent recipe- it is that it would be better if one could purchase larger bags of this candy.

Ah, the taste of my youth!
I have loved puff candy (or sponge candy as we called it) as long as I can remember. I hadn't had it decades because I could never find it. Thank you for the memories of my youth at the beach in summer. My only criticism, and it is a small one, is that pieces are huge and breaking them into smaller ones is difficult, messy and lends the candy to atmospherically melt. But it was worth the effort!

My friend and I used to buy this candy at the local general store... first we had to agree upon what we wanted to share, not easy. Then point it out to the owner... it was of course in a big showcase. Then we'd take it home and have to take a hammer to it to get pieces for each.

NOT AS ADVERTISED
Sorry Vermont Country Store; this product underwhelmed me. Only a very few pieces were of the 'honeycomb', melt-in-your-mounth variety. The majority of this molasses candy was hard as a rock and had to be broken up with a meat mallet into smaller pieces to even approach edible. Even then, the candy did not melt, so either the product was old or I misunderstood the ad in your catalog. I threw away two of the three bags in my order.

Reminds me of my Childhood
As a child 45 years ago, my mother introduced me to puff candy. We called it sponge candy because it looked just like a sponge. The taste is comforting and it melts in your mouth! Yum!
