The Bryant House Memorial Room

This building was built in 1827 as a dwelling house and, until we purchased it in 1959, was the home of the Bryants. The last of this early Vermont family, John Bryant and his wife, Maude, were dear friends of the Orton family. We have restored the name The Bryant House to honor them.

And upon this hangs a tale.

On their honeymoon, John Bryant's aunt and uncle went to the great 1876 Centennial Celebration, the World's Fair at Philadelphia. This marvelous exposition was the epitome of Victorian style in all its manifold and astonishing forms. A Michigan furniture maker contributed a bedroom set so the world might view their superior craftsmanship. This prize-winning furniture, hand carved of solid mahogany and Circassian walnut and embellished with all the fabulous elegance of the era, was purchased by the newlyweds, the story goes, for $900... a lot of money in 1876!

When John's uncle died, this bedroom set was left to John and Maude Bryant and was used by them all the rest of their lives. The bedroom set is now on exhibit in the bedroom upstairs.

In this room are many of the things John and Maude cherished. We have tried to arrange the room in exactly the way they would have wanted it. On the walls hang the portraits of John's uncle, D. C. Hutchins and his wife, Mary J., as well as pictures of John and Maude when they were young.

You may see The Bryant Room by asking your waiter or waitress.
