“I was born in Glenns Falls, New York and my first five years were spent in Neptune New Jersey. At age 6, my family moved to Midfield, Alabama - a western suburb of Birmingham (talk about a culture shock - from New Jersey to Alabama - Wow!). In the late 1950's and early 60's, my mom would always serve us Raltson cereal for breakfast. Until I got hooked on Coco Puffs and Captain Crunch, it was good old fashioned Ralston with lots of sugar that I would dump in it and mix it up. I got away from Ralston for many years until one day at one of the local grocery stores I discovered it on the shelf next to the Cream of Wheat (also one of my favorites) and the Quaker oatmeal. I tried it again for the first time (as Corn Flakes used to advertise) and got hooked. This time instead of sugar, I used the Great Value clover honey sold at WalMart. Honey is supposed to be a lot healthier than sugar you know. Anyway, it was fabulous and I got hooked. Then, next thing ya know, every store stopped carrying Ralston and I couldn't find it anywhere. So on a whim one night, I just put the word Ralston in a Google search and up popped the Vermont Country Store along with a bunch of sites for dog food which Purina is also famous for making. The key to making this cereal just right is to make sure to follow the directions on the box, however, don't cover and wait for the desired consistancy. Here is where you have to work a bit and be patient. When the water comes to a boil, slowly pour in the Ralston while continuously stirring. Don't get lazy at this point. Keep stirring until the water continues to evaporate in the steam. Stir until the cereal reaches the consistancy of a lava flow and then pull off the stove and pour into a rather deep dished bowl. Leave plenty of room in the bowl for the honey and milk. Add a pile of that honey to get it to your desired taste and then add the milk to cool the cereal down. Mix it all up and enjoy a super tasting healthy breakfast full of fiber. If I'm really feeling healthy that day, I add about 5 of those little powdered doughnuts to the breakfast for some extra calories. If I'm not feeling so healty, I'll slice up a naval orange (they come without the seeds ya know) and have that with some decaf coffee. Make sure to brush your teeth afterward to insure your teeth don't get stained from the coffee and the litte bits of Ralston aren't stuck between your teeth like grits. Well enjoy and remember that the only place you can find this great hot cereal from the good old days is the Vermont Country Store.
