What Our Customers Are Saying about Our Evening in Paris…

Dear Mr. Orton, Perhaps you might be interested in another cherished story of your fragrance, Evening in Paris. This is a story of a WWII veteran, married six months before Pearl Harbor. I was 19, she was 16, the year was 1936. It was my first date with any girl and she had invited me to her house to learn to dance. I had never dated before in my life and here I was supposed to oput my arms around this 16-year-old girl. She was wearing Evening in Paris perfume. The girl and the fragrance were pretty heady for a first date. I was smitten, and for a month afterwards I was haunted by the intoxicating scent of Evening in Paris. Last June we celebrated our 62nd wedding anniversary and about that time I saw your ad for Evening in Paris. I bought it for her for a Christmas present and she shrieked with delight when she opened it. It is a tale the whole family of children, grandchildren, and even one or two great-grandchildren have heard. My 'date' wore it to the 2003 family Christmas party and everyone wanted to find out what that mesmerizing fragrance had been like.
— Eldredge Welton, Orange, CA
Dear Mr. Orton, I'd like to share with you a wonderful experience I had recently at a local nursing home where I was giving a lesson for a religious meeting. Most of those attending were older women. I gave a short talk on keeping alive the good memories from our past. I asked those who wanted to share to give examples of memories of family, school, pets, hobbies, etc., that were things they treasured in their hearts and minds. Then I told one of my favorite memories of my youth—the small blue bottles of Evening in Paris that my grandmother gave me on special occasions like Christmas and my birthday. I held up the bottle that I had recently received from The Vermont Country Store. Eyes lit up as I told about the loving connection between my grandmother and myself and our love for the perfume. Several of the residents had owned it when they were younger and had loved it, too. When I asked if anyone would like a spray of Evening in Paris on their wrist to help them remember the scent they all wanted it—even the one man in attendance! So I sprayed a dozen or so wrists and enjoyed the smiles on their faces as they, too, remembered. We were a group of great-smelling people. I'm so glad I mentioned the perfume to your telephone order desk a while back. Apparently others did the same and now we can enjoy both the scent and the memories again.
— Janet Ridd, Holladay, UT
“Another one that went bye-bye was Evening in Paris. Thank you and your staff again!” — Serena Perkins, Camptonville, CA
“Dear Mr. Orton, My mother wore Evening in Paris my entire childhood. When she passed away in 1977, my daughter, Margie, and I in cleaning out her belongings found a little blue bottle tucked away in her dresser drawers - maybe two drops were in the bottle. My daughter tucked the bottle in her pocket and brought it home with her to place on a special shelf in her home. Over the years she made many phone calls, wrote countless letters to find the 'little blue bottle' to no avail. Imagine my delight and surprise when I opened your latest catalog and found it. I want to thank you and bless you for making an impossible dream come true for us.” — Patricia Hahn, Downey, CA
“Dear Mr. Orton, I just received my Evening in Paris cologne. When I sprayed some on my arm, I said, 'I am in heaven—that's it, that's it! I had no idea the formula would still be the same. It is wonderful. I wrote last year and asked if you could possibly get the cologne. Thank you so much for acquiring it! I never wore anything in my adult life except Evening in Paris. It was tops on gift lists. Then suddenly I went to work one day and it was gone, I was afraid forever. Bless you always for bringing back our lost products to us.” — Miriam Ammons, Raleigh, NC
When we arrived in Vermont, my sister, my best friend, and myself couldn't wait to get to your store. Needless to say it was the highlight of our trip. We're all of an age to remember buying Evening in Paris perfume for our mothers at every occasion. Visiting The Vermont Country Store was like a walk down memory lane.
— Martha Grimes, Farmingdale, NY
Dear Mr. Orton, My Love Story from the Heart. The year was 1959, the city was Munich, Germany. An American man and a German girl fall in love! In my youth, my very favorite, and only, perfume I had been wearing was Soir de Paris/Evening in Paris. Coming to America in 1962, needless to say, I had to find a new fragrance. Was I ever so happy that your catalogue found its way to my home. Thank you for bringing Evening in Paris into my life!
— Rose Marie Brown, Seattle, WA
Dear Mr. Orton, I grew up during the Depression in a small Pennsylvania town called Monongahela. In small towns there were no department stores, so for two little girls our department store was the local 5 & 10. Before every Christmas, Mother's Day, and our mother's birthday, we would save up the little change that we made doing odd jobs for relatives and neighbors and buy our mother a teeny-tiny bottle of Evening in Paris. She was always 'surprised' and delighted and we felt we had done something wonderful. So when I saw Evening in Paris advertised in your catalogue, it brought back happy memories of long-ago days. Thank you for making the fragrance available again. As I write this, I know that my mother is smiling down and remembering also.
— Shirley Chavis, Columbus, OH
“Dear Mr. Orton, Around Christmastime 2003 I thought I'd treat myself to your offer of one of my favorite fragrances, Evening in Paris. I ordered No.39712, Soir de Paris . . . I was so disappointed when it arrived, as it did not bring back any familiar memories. So I returned it. Last week I saw the entry in your catalogue for the larger, more familiar-looking bottle of cologne, No.43363. Because you seem like a warm, reputable company I thought I'd take a chance and try again. Well, I'm happy to say the minute I sprayed it on my arm I exclaimed, That's it! So thank you. I love it when I can find an old favorite. I'll keep watching your catalogue for more favorites.” — Barbara Scott, Royal Oak, MI
“In the early 40s I remember my mother wearing Evening in Paris in a small blue bottle. My first husband gave me a bottle for Christmas. It is the best I have ever worn. Year of 2007 my daughter found me a bottle some place she was searching. I was so surprised and overjoyed. I'm sure the formula has been changed as maybe the original was lost or not available. But what I received was wonderful. Thank you for bringing it back. Ladies that have never worn it don’t know what they are missing. My thanks, sincerely,” — Irene Fackrell, Lilburn, GA
“Oh my gosh! I loved this perfume in the 1950's! My mom use to buy a little bottle of it at G.C.Murphy's Dime Store for 10 cents! I still have a note from my 2nd grade teacher thanking for buying her a can of the talcum powder for Christmas in 1957! I found one of the little empty bottles at an antique store and one year while shopping in Fort Knox, Kentucky at antique store I found a WHOLE SET STILL IN THE ORIGINAL BOX! I was so delighted but since it was so old it stunk to high heaven but I still enjoy having the powder, perfume, cologne stick and mini cologne in a pretty blue and silver silk lined box! Thank you for letting me share this with you!” — Annamarie Bair, Indianapolis, IN
“This is my childhood memory of Evening in Paris. My father was an alcoholic. As such it was difficult for him to keep a job and provide for his family. One Christmas Eve my father was "lit" well before the Christmas tree, but he had walked in the door bearing the satin-lined gift box of Evening in Paris. I don't remember the gift making my mother much happier about my father's Christmas "CHEERS!-fulness." Yet, I always keep a silver bottle of Evening in Paris I found at an antique store on my dresser. When I need a childhood memory fix, I reach for the Evening in Paris. Sniff....waaaaaah.” — Beverly Chapin, Carson City, NV
“I remember as a child how much my mother loved Evening in Paris perfume, and how Dad used to buy it for her. I gave it to Mom this past Christmas, right before Dad passed away. It brought back a feeling of romance, sensuality, gentleness, and softness. It had such a NICE smell for me! I loved it! I had these images of actually being in France with the French! “When I was little my mom always had a beautiful blue bottle of the most wonderful-smelling aroma I had ever smelled on her dressing table. Later I found out it was Evening in Paris parfum. She only wore it on very special occasions, as being a preacher's wife, such luxuries were considered too much for a pastor's wife to have. Dad bought it for her anyway out of the money he made working his other job as a welder for a sign company. He always gave mom what she wanted, which was never much, so when she did want something, he always found a way to get it. Evening in Paris parfum was one of those wants, but she treasured it greatly. When it was no longer available she was heartbroken. I always said if I ever found it again, I would get it for her. It is to be her Christmas gift this year. Thank you for making her dream and my promise come true.” — Tommie Luster, Batesville, AR
“When I was a little girl growing up in the 50's, I had a wonderful mother who always put her three children above herself. One day as I was looking through her top dresser drawer, I found a tiny blue glass bottle with a blue tassel called Evening In Paris perfume. I knew that this was a secret luxury for mother and that she treasured it. My daddy had bought it for her.” — Lenora Smith, Farmersville, TX

“When I was a little girl in the 1950s, I remember my mom always having a bottle of Evening in Paris perfume on her dresser. I don't know why but I thought it was so pretty, and she would always tell me, "Now don't get into that!" and I wouldn't but I always remember that pretty bottle of perfume on her dresser. Wow, was I surprised to see that in your store! It brought back so many memories.” — Bonnie Howell, canton, MI

“I recently purchased a bottle of this fragrance for my mother for her birthday. She told me that her mother bought this fragrance for her when she was just a young girl. So, I thought it would be a great birthday present for her (to bring back fond memories of her mother). I gave it to her yesterday, and I, too, was anxious to not only see my mother's reaction, but to see what this fragrance smelled like. You might find this hard to believe but when I was 9 years old, I had a teacher who always smelled so wonderful. I used to tell her that she smelled pretty every day in school. I've never forgotten that scent. But I also never got the chance to ask her the name of the fragrance she wore. I've been searching for that same scent now for 40 years. To my surprise, when I gave this bottle of Evening in Paris to my mother, she let me spray a little bit on myself. I could not believe it -- this was the fragrance I'd been searching for! It's absolutely incredible! My mother was very happy to receive this fragrance, too (since the last time she had it was in her mid-30s). She just turned 83 years old. I am so happy to find this very special fragrance. I just ordered another bottle (for myself this time, of course). Yes -- it is that good! Please, please, please do not ever stop making Evening in Paris available for us. Thank you so much for bringing it back (the memories are so precious to both of us). Keep up the fantastic work for bringing back products that we've all thought were gone forever. It means so much to all of your customers!” — Karen Albers, Owings Mills, MD
“Takes me back to my childhood. Since I was old enough to remember, my mom (and all my mom's friends and neighbors) and all of my aunts had their small collections of perfumes and colognes, all neatly arranged and displayed on bathroom shelves or dresser tops. They were more than scents, they were little treasures, these little bottles of different shapes and sizes. Evening In Paris was one of them. You secretly hoped other people would notice and remember. Some scents I did associate with different wearers, and to this day I will ask a complete stranger what she is wearing because it will stir a memory. We lived in a small, poor working-class neighborhood but even though we didn't have much, our moms and friends' moms had their perfumes. One of my very first Christmas presents I remember was a small set of perfume bottles shaped like teddy bears, these were from my dad, and to this day I can remember the scent. Wish I could remember the name, but, I was 10 or 11.” — Ernestina Foulenfont, Phoenix, AZ
“It reminds me of my youth (1940s and '50s) and my family at that time. I was in my teens and early 20s. Romantic days!” — Agha Ata, Houston, TX
